レオン・C・メギンソンの
学術文献（1963年）からの引用で、
チャールズ・ダーウィンの『種の起源』の内容を
わかりやすく書き換えたものだそうです。
原文にはこう書かれています。
It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives,
it is not the strongest that survives,
but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt
and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.
生き残る種とは、最も知的なものではなく、
最も強いものでもない。
